When I had my studio on the hill in Upper Ojai, I start every day with a cup of coffee, a bagel, and the LA Times. I'd sit among my rocks and do the daily crossword puzzle. It was during this time that I'd hear something coming from one of the fenceposts and I'd pick up my sketch pad and doodle.
One morning a small grainy photo in the newspaper caught my eye. There had been a festival in Thailand and the photo was that of a young woman putting flowers on an altar. This time it was a case of looking for the rock that might hold the image, rather than the image within the rock.
