Martha Moran: Urns Don't Have to be Anonymous Wood Boxes

Updated: Oct 5

Years ago a buyer at the Beckman Show in LA suggested I make urns.  I liked the idea, but not until this year did I actually make some.  It has been an extraordinary experience working with Louise Martin who brought me objects that belonged to her son Alexis.  She said he was quirky and funny and loved sports and life so much.   I never got to meet him, but I feel like I know him a bit now.  And it has been the loveliest journey to go on with her as we created this vessel.

One of my neighbors also wanted an urn for her mother's ashes. She loved quail as I do. And like my herons, I've always wanted to create quail from found wood. I find it very tranquil and satisfying to create something that gives a little joy at a time of so much loss.

If you’d like to see them, Louise and my neighbor both agreed to let me display them on the tour.  I’m working on two other urns for my dogs Toshi and Yuki, but not sure those will be ready in time…
