Every painting I make starts with this sort of sketchy pencil drawing with cut-outs. To me it's a beautiful mess that is a map of how I plan and compose a new painting by roughing in lines and shapes and moving cut out bits of drawings around until they look right to me.
This one was inspired by a visit to a big garden where I was lucky to see a group of rabbits having a great time doing rabbity things; eating leaves and hopping around. They are a lot of fun to draw with their expressive faces and smooshy bodies. The painting is pretty large for my detailed way of working and it will be in process all of the month of July.
