Julie Grist: Winging It

There are certain pieces of work that come from a place deep and true. This painting - "Winging" - flows with energy, the wind, the curvature of the earth, and the free spirit of someone using the forces of nature, in nature, to celebrate life.

My son flies over the ocean on a board outfitted with a foil that, when he gets up to speed, propels him 2-3 feet above the waves and scrum of ocean currents, all generated by the wind and some strong muscles and a balanced core. When not on the ocean he takes to skates on the Long Beach bike path and pumps his wing - flying over land, the sea beyond. It makes me happy to see and paint his energy.
