I was recently in London and decided to drag out an old watercolor technique I developed while working on my master's in fine art. Based on the old masters' technique of starting a painting in one color called grisaille, I cover the whole painting with Davy's Grey. This is a perfect base color for London--a typically grey city. So I sat on the embankment in a little cafe--actually an airstream serving cocktails--drinking a delicious passion fruit daiquiri and decided to paint the buildings of Parliament and Big Ben. Since I usually paint people, something sitting still is a real treat. Back in the studio, working from my journal sketch on a larger version, I was in the middle of a critical part of this painting when my cat--who loves to bring me presents in my studio was trying to get in through her cat door. I opened the door to find out what was going on and she released a rabbit into my studio. Now rats, gophers and mice are welcome gifts, rabbits and birds NOT. I managed to get the rabbit out of my studio--imprison my murderous cat--(I love my cat)--and finish the painting.
